Many fish oil producers make their tests hard to find

Not all manufacturers have any interest in letting you find the lab reports on their fish oil. Commonly, the reports aren’t available, or even mentioned. Sometimes you might find yourself wondering if the producer actually does any testing.

Well, all omega 3 oils sold in developed countries must meet some standard. Unfortunately, the standard can be so low (such as that set by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration) that it is all but useless, and ignored by the whole industry.

As a quick rule, if you can’t easily find the lab tests for any oil, why even consider buying it?

Why current test reports are important

You probably wouldn’t be reading this if you didn’t already know that mercury and PCBs are two common toxic chemicals found in fish. Both get concentrated in the fatty tissue — the oil, in other words. And larger fish like tuna and mackerel, both excellent sources of omega 3’s, are near the top of the food chain — exactly where toxins tend to be concentrated.

If you plan to consume omega 3 oils regularly — a wonderful idea — you want to know that the oil you are using is the purest available. Two of the most widely-used standards to measure purity are the European Pharmacopeia and the Norwegian Medicinal Standard.

Make sure the oil you use meets at least one of those two standards.

The simplest way to check purity and freshness

Ideally, it should be easy for you to check purity and freshness of omega 3 supplements. It should be as quick and easy as reading the label on a can or a package of frozen vegetables. That’s what I want, and what I recommend.

I buy my omega 3 oil online. I do that partly because the manufacturer makes it easy to find test results. I go to the website, look up fish oil — and purity is the first thing mentioned. One click and I’m reading the purity standard. Type in “certificate of analysis” and immediately I’m reading it. In other words, this is what the test lab found in the oil I can buy right now.
